Planning to move to Harris with my family, my business requires fast connection speeds, what are my options in this area?
We are currently in the process of tendering for a broadband network which will bring high speed connectivity to many of the communities within the Western Isles. The location of your home or business premises will dictate what level of access you can connect to. Services like ISDN (128k) are commonly available throughout the Western Isles and some ISPs now provide flat rate charges from £27 per month. You still need to pay the quarterly line rental of course.

I am considering relocating my business to the Western Isles - what support can I expect to receive?
We are always happy to discuss plans to relocate to the islands. Any financial assistance is of course dependant on a number of factors and you will be required to develop a business plan but donít let that put you off as help may also be available with this. Our own services can include assistance in finding suitable office accommodation & skilled staff. Training assistance may be available for any new skills that may be necessary. Provided you qualify Graduate placement and New Deal schemes can help by paying a percentage of initial staff costs for a predetermined period of time. Businesses planning a move to the Outer Hebrides can now take advantage of the extensive broadband coverage throughout the Islands. Depending on where you are planning to relocate to in Harris you can either utilise ADSL through BTís enabled exchange in Tarbert or the revolutionary wireless network provided by Hebrides.net.

How do I become a teleworker?
You have several options open to you (1) if resident in the Hebrides or planning to relocate here; you can add your details to our Skills Register and be notified of all suitable work opportunities. (2) You can discuss teleworking with your present employer and try to come to an agreement for working part time or full time from home. (3) Seek out your own work sources by contacting local businesses/ colleges etc. and advertising your services and costs. You should have work samples and rates available for prospective employers to view.

Can I be included in your register if I live outside of the Western Isles?
Our mission is job creation within the Western Isles, unfortunately unless you are planning to relocate to the islands you cannot be included.

What equipment do I need to work from home?
You would need a reasonably high spec PC with virus software, an internet connection and of course the skills to operate the system efficiently.

Do I need to have internet access to telework?
Yes. The majority of work is received and returned by email or through a web browser.

Can I register with you to work from home rather than from an office?
If you complete a skills register form and send us a CV we will hold your details on file and alert you to all suitable home-based work opportunities.

I have recently graduated from university and would like to return home to work in Lewis - can you help me find a job?
Complete a skills register form and send us a CV and we will alert you to all work opportunities that suit your skills. Careers Scotland in Stornoway also assists graduates to source work opportunities.

Do I need to be registered self employed to work from home?
Only if you are going to work on a contract basis with your clients. If you are on their payroll then you donít need to register for obvious reasons. The necessary forms are available from www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk

Are you a job agency?
We emphasise we are not a job agency and do not guarantee to find you work. However, we are another avenue you have when looking for new work opportunities in the Western Isles.

How much should I charge for my work?
In some cases you have to determine the length of time it will take you to complete a piece of work before you can come up with a price, eg word processing, how long to transcribe an A4 page? How many pages can you comfortably manage in an hour? What hourly rate do you consider your skills worth?
In many cases work is paid per record eg data entry, you would need to work out how many records you could process in 1 hour and work out a per record fee from this.
Remember to allow for down time in your calculations.

I am considering relocating to the islands, what are my chances of finding work as an IT Consultant?
We are unable to quantify what your chances might be although both the demand for services is growing so are the number of people offering similar skills. If you add your details to our skills register and send us a CV we will circulate it to suitable work opportunities that come to our notice.

What is ECDL?
These initials stand for European Computer Driving License and itís an internationally recognised log book that proves your level of competence in 7 separate modules. ie The Basic Concepts of IT, Using a Computer & Managing Files, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database & Filing Systems, Presentation & Drawing and Information Network Services.
