Hitachi Data Systems And Iomart Group plc Announce Data Storage Deal For UK's First Outsourced Mission-Critical Email Platform

iomart Media Release - 2000-05-20

Windows eNTerprise 2000, 21 November 2000 - Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. and iomart Group plc today announce a data storage deal to jointly provide the UK's first outsourced mission-critical email platform.

Hitachi Data Systems, one of the world's leading infrastructure solutions providers, has been chosen by iomart Group plc, the integrated telecommunications and internet services company, to supply the data storage equipment for iomart's ThinkMail email platform. Thinkmail will go to full commercial roll out early next year.

iomart's ThinkMail is a mission-critical email platform offering security, reliability and storage. The product is aimed at business, central and local government, the health service, utilities as well as the legal and accountancy professions throughout the UK.

Hitachi Data Systems are supplying iomart with the new high performance, Freedom Storage™ Lightning 9900™, the industry?s highest performance storage system and the first in a new generation of storage systems based on an internal switch-network architecture.

Said iomart ASP Director, Daniel Smith: "The market for outsourced applications is growing. Nowhere is this more apparent than in relation to mission-critical email in a more wide spectrum of sectors where email is a core tool and used for the communication of sensitive or confidential information.

"ThinkMail combines the necessity for email reliability and security with the obvious benefits of message storage and archiving. These key elements depend on the infrastructure and we felt there was no better route to achieving our business goal than with the Hitachi Data Systems solution. We chose Hitachi Data Systems because of the high level of performance demonstrated by the Lighting 9900 and their willingness to work with our internal technical teams to develop a best of breed solution."

His comments were echoed by Bjarne Poulsen, managing director, Hitachi Data Systems UK: "iomart required a solution that delivered on mission critical performance and availability. We delivered a storage solution that would both scale with their operation while providing the absolute highest level of uptime. I am delighted to be able to provide the ASP market with the kind of support they really need but rarely get. Hitachi Data Systems envisaged the demand for this calibre of subsystem so the Lightning 9900 caters perfectly for the rapidly expanding ASP infrastructure market."

With a shortage of IT staff bringing the problem into still sharper focus, iomart believe that outsourced email will increasingly become the norm in the UK as business and others realise there are substantial cost savings to be made and convincing benefits to be gained.
